League Rules and Procedures

Playing Rules and Procedures

Game Format –
All games consist of three-15-minute, stop
clock periods, and 2 minute minor penalties.
If the game ends in a tie, and if time
allows, there will be a 1-minute break, then
a 5-minute running time of 5 on 5 sudden
death overtime play. Points are awarded as
follows: 2 points for win. Overtime play
goes by the NHL point system. One time-out
will be allowed per team (except during
overtime). A, B, and C Leagues allow for
full slap shot, and NO checking. Red Line
icing.

Start of Game and Periods –
There will be a 5-minute warm-up. If a
team does not have enough players on the ice
to begin the game after the designated
warm-up period has ended, the referee shall
direct the scorekeeper to place 15 minutes
on the game clock and start the clock. If,
within 5 minutes, additional players show
up, the time lapsed will be deducted from
the first period. If, after 5 minutes have
expired, and a team still does not have
enough players on the ice to start the game,
the game shall be declared a forfeit in
favor of the opposing team (no time-out
allowed). If neither team has enough
players to start the game, the referee shall
deem the game a forfeit and both teams will
be charged with a loss.

Player Identification –
All players who are properly registered
will receive a helmet sticker. All players
must be registered and fees paid to Piney
Orchard Ice Arena before playing in the
league. If a player plays in a game and
they are not properly registered, the game
is a forfeit and the player will be
suspended for 2 games.

Player Identification Check –
A team captain may request the referees
perform a player ID check any time before
the game and during the game up to the
beginning of the third period. When
requested, the referees will require the
player(s) in question to produce photo
identification and will verify that the
player’s name(s) appear on the team roster.
If the player in question is an illegal
player, the team that he is playing for will
forfeit the game. If the player is not an
illegal player, the team requesting the ID
check will be charged with a bench minor
penalty for delay of game.
Illegal Player – An illegal player is any
player who:
1.	Participates in a game while suspended;
or
2.	Is not properly registered with the
league; or
3.	Is not on the team roster.

Mercy Rule –
If after the second period, the difference
in the score reaches 10 goals, there will be
a running clock. If the losing teams comes
within 3 goals in the third period, the
clock will go back to stop time.

Team Jerseys –
All players on the same team must have
similarly colored jerseys. The jersey for
each player of the team must have a
permanently affixed number on the back of
the jersey. This number must correspond to
the number for that player on the team
roster. This requirement is in effect from
the opening day of the season. If team
jerseys are deemed too similar in color by
the referees, the visiting team will wear
league-provided vests. Identification of
captains – Team Captains and alternates will
wear a “C” or “A” on their jersey. These
players shall also be identified on the team
roster. They are the only players who ay
discuss game situations. They are the only
players who may discuss game situations with
the referees. If none of the team captains
or alternates are present, the team will
appoint a bench captain for the game and
notify the referee of this before the start
of the game.

the player will receive a game misconduct

game.

2nd game misconduct – 5 game suspension
3rd game misconduct – suspended for the
rest of the season and forfeits any fees

referees will be permanently expelled from
the league forfeiting any fees already paid.

will be posted on the league web site and on
the league bulletin board. Any suspended
player, playing in a game while suspended,
will get a 6 game suspension and that team
will forfeit that game.

Team Rosters
There is no limit on the number of players
on team roster; however, the league limits
the number of players on the bench to 18
skaters and 2 goalies per game. A player
can only be rostered on 1 team, in only 1
league. Violation of this will result in
player suspension and game forfeit. Minimum
game requirement for eligibility for
playoffs: Players who are on the roster at
the start of the season have a 6 game
requirement. Players who are added to the
roster after the start of the season must
play a minimum of 6 games to be eligible to
participate in the playoffs. Players must
complete registration forms 48 hours before
playing.

Schedule Changes
Teams that have conflicts with published
schedule times have three choices.
1.	Show up and play the game
2.	Not show up and forfeit
3.	Contact the opposing team captain and
get agreement to reschedule the game. Both
captains must email the league no later than
10 days before game time. There will be a
rescheduling fee of $125 charged to the team
requesting rescheduling if this is requested
less than 10 days before the scheduled game
date. (There is minimal ice time available
for rescheduling of adult league games.
Final approval of request for rescheduling
of game will be made by Hockey Director).

Division place standing will be updated
weekly (Friday) on the League web site.

Tiebreakers for teams tied in the league
standings at the end of the regular season:
1.	Most overall wins;
2.	Points awarded in head-to-head
competition;
3.	Higher GF/GA differential in
head-to-head competition;
4.	Fewest goals allowed against all teams;
5.	Fewest penalty minutes
