League Summary:
Mike Moyer pitched a masterful shutout and the Rangers' bats came alive for four runs in the fifth inning for a 5-0 win over the Yankees, champions of the end-of-season playoff tournament. With the victory the Rangers, regular season champs, now advance to the District 4 Tournament of Champions for the second time in the last three years.
Matt Balich was, as always, superb on the hill for the Yanks, starting the game with three perfect innings and finishing with a four-hitter with only two walks against eight strikeouts in five frames, including five in a row.
Ranger catcher Nick Capps called a great game. Moyer used fastballs, knuckleballs and changeups and excellent location to keep the Yankees off balance. Only two Yankees made it as far as second base.
The Rangers' first run was as cheap as they come. Moyer walked in the fourth, advanced on a passed ball and a ground out, and scored on Gus Anderson-Kline's RBI groundout, as Yankee shortstop Eric Selvin made a great backhanded stop but had no play at home. In the fifth, Capps doubled to the wall in left-center, David Fong doubled to right, driving in Capps, Alex Bonacum walked, and Moyer doubled to the wall, knocking in two. Gold-glove third baseman Daniel Williams then singled to right to drive in the last run.
Yankee Cameron Corwin had two hits, and Ted Shryock and Anthony Cozart one each. Balich scorched a line drive in the first, but right at the shortstop. Many of these friendly rivals, including both pitchers, who are neighbors and former teammates, will now join forces to play for all stars.
The Ranger's first TOC game will be this Friday, June 25th at Chabot at 6:00 p.m.
