Nearing the End of the Mariners' Season...
Last Updated: 5/24/2007
0 and 14 doesn't sound pretty. But then again, 14 and 0 doesn't guarantee perfection and harmony. Many who play baseball say, "baseball is life." To non-baseball fans, this phrase might suggest the speaker doesn't have his or her priorities straight. But the non-baseball fans would be wrong. Baseball is life in that it contains snapshots of life, encapsulated by catchy sayings, like "it ain't over til' it's over;" "shake it off," or my favorite, "it's not whether you win or lose that's important, it's how you play the game." My Mariners continue to play as hard as any team I've ever coached and have played the game with respect it deserves. Indeed, I doubt any of my past teams would have had the same character and resillency as these young men. After all, when the going gets tough, we know where the tough go.... the same place where my Mariners are going.

S2 Padres vs S7 Mariners
Away Notes:
Alas, this will be the Mariners' final notes for 2007 as solid defense and pitching set the tone for this game. Christian C. scattered four runs in three innings of work, against a team who double-digited us in the past. John B. then pitched the next three, and with some solid defense, only gave up one more run. The Mariners put up two in the fourth on hits from Zach, John and Alex, but when the Padres' pitching duo puts up 13 Ks, you know additional runs would be hard to come by. Kudos though to Sam F. who played some outstanding defense in the OF, as he almost came away with an amazing diving catch to steal one away from the Padres. Best of luck, Padres...! I hope you crush everyone else as it'd be nice to know we gave you the closest game.... On a parting note, my hats off to a great group of M's as they played their hearts out, battling the second-place Padres to the very end. They did great to win their first playoff game, which let them know they were more than the sum of the regular season record. It has been my honor and privilege to be associated with these 13 young men, and we look forward to everyone who will come back to help us continue the Mariner legacy in 2008.

Padres record: 11-7-0
