Playoff Loss (6 - 8) vs Pelicans View
Date: 6/9/2007 3:00p
Location: Front Caldecott
League Summary:
S3 Angels vs S5 Pelicans
Home Notes:
The Angels playoff game was a rematch of their regular season ending game against the Pelicans. The Angels’ bats could not find the gaps in the first four innings, and the Pelicans’ did, with the Pelicans taking a 7-0 lead through the top of the 5th. Michael W.’s outstanding play in right field during these early innings limited the damage from the Pelicans’ offense. The Angels were down, but not out, as they came up with 2 in the bottom of the 5th and 4 in the bottom of the 6th to make it 7-6, but left the bases jammed. After the Pels picked up an insurance run in the top of the 7th, the Angels again loaded the bases in the bottom of the 7th, but, fighting until the final out, were not able to push across the equalizer. The strong pitching of starter Vince B., and relievers Galen E. and Eli B. kept the Angels close, holding the Pelicans scoreless over the last two innings, aided by a sliding, tumbling catch of a high fly ball down the left field line by outfielder Jeffrey D. The Angels were disappointed to end their season, but, as they had all season long, win or lose, they shook the Pelicans’ hands, congratulated them on a game well played and wished them luck in their next game.
Away Notes:
Wow, what a finish!

The Pels jump out to a 2-0 lead in the first with a leadoff single and then a series of walks, and obstruction call and some missed signs. They extend by 1 in the 3rd and again in the 4th on productive outs by Mexico and Molasses.

Thru the bottom of the 4th, Mo had shut the Angels down - he faced just one batter over the minimum, a sharp single by JohnM to left in the third. The bulk of the defense was bucket drill over and over to Bar Mitzvah at short, altho Tapeworm and Peppermint each contributed great outfield catches on sinking linedrives. The Pels led 4-0 entering the fifth, and a sac fly by Bullwinkle and a huge 2-out, 2-RBI knock by Tape put them up 7-0.

The bottom of the 5th saw the Angels pull the first thread that eventually unravelled most of the Pels' tapestry. The thread they pulled was labelled 'patience'. Mo was approaching his 75-pitch limit and he simply lost the strikezone. Three walks, a FC, and error and a single later, Mo was gone and the Pels looked vulnerable. Silk closed the inning, but the Angels had narrowed the Pelican lead to 7-2. After a brilliant start, Silk lost the zone himself in the 6th with 3 walks, an error and a sharp single up the middle to MichaelW. The Angels pulled the next thread, labelled 'confidence'.

In an emergency move, Mumbles doffed the catcher's gear and took the mound wearing first his own, then a teammate's glove. With the bases juiced and the Angels believing, his first pitch plunked JeffD in the arm and forced in run #3 of the frame.

Adding injury to injury, JeffD was hit in the foot with a ball off the bat of EliB. The runner's interference gave the Pels out #1, but perhaps most importantly, it stopped the unravelling. Mumbles allowed 1 more run to score on a Sac groundout by VinceB, but escaped the sixth.

The bottom of the Pels lineup did some damage in the 7th, with Mexico, Tapeworm and Mo all singling to land an insurance run. The Angels were having none of it, tho, leading off the 7th with back to back singles. Mumbles at this point, focused down to what mattered most - the batter - and retired two Angels by himself (K and P1) to end the game.

Kudos to the Angels' hit machine, who knew how to choke back the throttle and take a walk. Congrats, also, to the Angels who made it thru a tough, injury marred 2007 campaign with a strong finish and a teamful of smiles.
