Game Summary Yogi Varinsky smoked a one out line drive single to right field to drive in the winning run as the Yankees pulled out a 2-1 extra inning victory over the A’s. Matt Balich opened the ninth with a bloop single to left, then stole second and third to set the stage for Varinsky’s clutch hit.

Shortstop Alan Banks made the defensive play of the day when he threw out an A’s runner at the plate. Catcher Varinsky laid down a textbook tag to cut off an A’s rally.

Thomas Mora went five innings, striking out 14 A’s batters and giving up only one hit and the A’s only run. Balich came on in relief in the sixth and shut out the A’s the rest of the way to notch the win.

Varinsky and Matthew Kaufman each collected two hits for the Yankees.
