Game Summary | Strong pitching and fielding by all the players was the distinguishing feature of this game between very evenly matched teams. The Rainiers managed to chip away at the Islanders defense in the early innings, establishing a 6-0 lead through four and a half frames with some good baserunning and timely hitting. Outstanding pitching by Joey Demeter (3 IP, no runs, 4 SO) in the early innings gave the Rainiers the early advantage. A fine catch of a sizzling line drive and putout by Islanders third baseman, (David H?), for an unassisted double play limited the Rainiers to one run in the first. The Islanders put one run across in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the fifth, Jim Parker made all three putouts at second base for the Rainiers to choke off a potential Islanders rally. Two of those outs were outstanding catches. The Islanders stranded two runners when the Rainiers closed it out in the bottom of the sixth. Jon C. pitched the final two innings for the Islanders without giving up a run. Hitting was evenly distributed amongst the players on both teams, with both Sean T. and Ken F. walking and scoring the runs for the Islanders, while David H., Corey D. and Julian P. were all 1-2. For the Rainiers Ian McArdle (2-2, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Chase McVeigh-Walker (2-2, run scored), Jim Parker and Zach D'Amato (both with 2-3, run, RBI) stood out. Home plate umpire Stanley Peterwyck had a strong outing, dusting the plate with notable panache (btw, is this guy a spy for ESPN?). |
