| Team Summaries | Chandler Wolves Notes: In a battle for playoff position, Chandler knocked off Desert Vista to take the five-seed with their fifth straight victory. It was a number of new faces who took center stage for the Wolves as contributions came from their entire roster. Andrew Hibdon stepped up his game, leading the Wolves with 3 goals, including the first goal of the game only 66 seconds in the game. Junior defenseman, Joey Wussler, stepped up to cover Desert Vista's top threat, Cody Wood, and kept him from scoring though halftime when Joe Preston took over that daunting task. James Cappuccio and Josh May set the tone for the Wolves early, winning critical ground balls in the first quarter. Anthony LaFlam continued his assault on the goals per pound record for a single season, having a hand in 3 of the first 4 Chandler tallies. The Thunder got its usual outstanding play from goaltender Chris Roscak, who made plays between and beyond the pipes. Desert Vista's long-sticks did a great job of moving the ball upfield on the clear resulting in some of DV's best scoring opportunities. Austin Clark showed his usual finishing touch, leading the Thunder with 2 goals. Keith Rusin scored a man-up goal with a cannon from the perimiter. Cliff Capria charged down the field to set up Clark with 8 seconds to go in the first half, giving the Thunder the momentum going into halftime. The Wolves developed a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter, primarily on the strength of their ground ball play. That 4-goal cushion ended up being the story of the game. While DV mounted a comeback in the second and third quarters, some of the lesser-known Wolves like Jared Davis, Johnny Celaya, Rene Alvarez, Gove, Cappuccio, and May made crucial plays that got the ball back to Chandler's usual scorers like Eric Nelson, Tory Weissert, Abel Haro and Andrew Hibdon, who put in the last 4 goals. While Chandler kept scoring goals that seemed like back-breakers, Desert Vista kept battling back, 6-4, then 7-5. But in the end, Chandler's discipline on defense was too much. The team-D with starting long poles of Wussler, May, Celaya, and Jeff Ryan along with short-stick d-middies, Nate Townsend, James Cappuccio and Ian Griesbacher kept DV's 6-vs-6 game close to scoreless. And with only one time-serving penalty on Chandler all game, DV's lethal man-up became a non-factor. When the smallest kid on the field, Eric Nelson, put the Wolves up 9-5 at the end of the third quarter, it started to look like the upset was on. Desert Vista Thunder Notes: |
