Mercer Island Notes: No notesIssaquah Notes: Issaquah 3-2-0-1-6 Mercer 0-2-6-2-11
A good Friday night match up on the Island and unfortunately for Issaquah a could have been classic slid away in the 3rd quarter.
Issaquah came out well prepared for the Mercer zone and started zone busting. Cam Huhta's step down shooting off a few back picks had Issaquah up 3-0 at the end of the 1st and flying high! Mercer was patient offensively and finally broke the ice early in the 2nd. Islanders would cut the lead to one with 2:43 to play in the half, but Issaquah got it right back. On the ensuing faceoff, Jared Humenny broke out of the pack with the gb to start a break and Huhta's hot shooting continued. Issaquah got one more before the half, zone busting again as Griffin Fish found Kyle Wisler sneaking inside.
Though the score remained 5-2 at the half, the tide actually started to turn the last 30 seconds of the half. Issaquah had the ball and seemingly in position for the last shot. A moving screen call gave the ball back to Mercer and they drew a flag before time expired. As such Mercer started the 2nd half man-up and it was a spark they needed.
Beginning with the man-up, Islanders came out firing in the 2nd and just kept finding the net. Issaquah had multiple chances to stop the bleeding but failed to finish on multiple doorstep chance. The one they did appear to finish was quickly raked out of the goal and called no good- tough break that allowed Mercer to keep momentum. When the dust settled Mercer had gone on 7-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. Issaquah finally broke the run with a man-up goal midway through the 4th and the game went 9-6 until late when Mercer added a couple to ice it.
Mercer's calm, patience and discipline eventually won out. |
